Last Minute SF Info from K1

September 30, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment
Hi all!
Okay. Most of this we’ve gone over, but please read as there are a few new things:
WEATHER
Looks like it may be a wet one Saturday. Temps will be mid 50s to low 60s this weekend; please pack accordingly. Some things that will be nice to have for and between races: quick-drying long sleeves, athletic pants, parka or water proof jacket, sunglasses (for the spray), towel.
UNIFORMS
Please contact Jeannie if you do not have a jersey, and she will set you up with one. For those who have extra uniforms please also contact Jeannie.
BART INFORMATION from Mike–thanks!
If you’re flying into SFO or OAK you will need to take the BART and get off at Montgomery St. Station.

Note for those arriving into OAK.  You will need to take the AirBART (shuttle) from the airport to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station.  Runs every 10 minutes and costs $3 (exact change only).

SFO -> Montgomery is $5.35 fare (take Yellow line – runs every 15 minutes)
OAK -> Montgomery is $3.55 fare (take Green or Blue line – runs every 7-8 minutes between both)

From the station, the hotel will be able a 0.5 mile walk North.  Click link for Google Maps directions.  You probably could walk North on Montgomery for a shorter route than what is shown in the map.

HOTEL INFORMATION
Hilton San Francisco Financial District
750 Kearney St.
(415)433-6600
Attached is the rooming list from Diane–thanks!
CONTACT INFORMATION
If you will not be staying at the hotel, please e-mail me with your cell number, in case we need to make any announcements/updates not covered in the team meeting. Please also send me you cell information if I do not already have it; the list is compiled for emergency purposes.
FRIDAY PRACTICE
LARD has 2 boats scheduled from 3-4pm. Please make this if you can to familiarize yourself with water conditions and the boats. Jason will have your paddles. There will be a free shuttle at the hotel leaving at 2pm. Please meet in the lobby at 1:45pm for the shuttle. We will also be using this shuttle on the race days.
FRIDAY TEAM MEETING
There will be a team meeting at 9pm to review Saturday’s race schedule and meeting times. Location TBD; likely a meeting room or lobby of the hotel.
TEAM DINNERS
Saturday: team dinner with Dieselfish at 7:30pm. If you are attending, please pay in advance to Jessica.
Sunday: if you’ll be around, we’ll be at the San Francisco Brewing Company. Welcome to join!
Thanks to everyone for getting your waivers in to me on time. We are now officially a registered team with SCDBC! Remember to take it easy with the work outs this week (but stay active!) and stay hydrated. Have a safe trip up and we’ll see you in SF!

September 29, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

All right!  We completed our last practices of the season all of our boats – Red, Black and both of our gender squads have shaped up and are running well.

Your many months of training are going to be tested this weekend in San Francisco where we’ll be racing some of the best teams on the west coast.

Other teams are coming out with a vengeance.  Let’s finish this season off strong by running our best race pieces this season.

More LARD traveling information will be posted later this week as a protected post.  Email me or any of the coaches for the password.

Take care of yourself this week and see you up in San Francisco!

Tina Fey is at it Again

Wow, Tina Fey’s Palin impersonation of Sarah Palin is dead-on.  SNL did another piece on Palin.  Here’s some of it with CNN commentary.

Slacker Uprising

September 27, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

Michael Moore has put out some great documentaries – Fahrenheit 911 was my favorite.  This time around, he’s doing something never done before – he’s releasing his movie for free on the internet.

The movie is called “Slacker Uprising” and its about Michael Moore touring the swing states in the U.S. with special guests (Eddie Vedder, REM, etc.) in ‘04 trying to get young voters to vote in record numbers.

You can download it straight from iTunes, or from here.

Here’s the trailer:

Vote for Our Next President by Mail

September 26, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

If you are anything like me, it’s usually a big pain in the @$$ to get to the voting boothes on election day.  Barrack emailed me today reminding me about voting by mail.

You can apply to vote by mail on the California Secretary of State website.

If you haven’t registered to vote yet, you can do so HERE.

Do me one favor – educate yourself before you pull the voting trigger.  We have too many idiots in this nation.  Don’t be another one.

DO THIS TODAY BEFORE YOUR FORGET.

…why not Michael Douglas?  Brought to you by Mike L.

I prefer Sylvester Stallone because he was Rambo AND Rocky.

McCain: from War Hero to Chicken $h1t

September 25, 2008 paddlesports 2 comments

John McCain went from war hero to a chicken that can’t multi-task in a matter of days.  Most of you know that McCain is suspending his campaign to focus on the failing economy.  HELLO????  Aren’t presidents supposed to be able to deal with multiple issues at the same time?

Anyways, he was supposed to appear on David Letterman but canceled.  Instead, he appeared with Katie Couric. Here’s Letterman’s very well reasoned response – it’s worth the 9 minutes.

Champion Dragon Boat Review

September 24, 2008 paddlesports 2 comments

Our beloved Champion Dragon Boats are reviewed here. There’s also a BuK review and a Gemini review.  Check out the picture for th Champion review:

That’s Team USA in Boat 4 at the 2006 ICF World Dragon Boat Championships in Taiwan (10 man division) – you can easily pick out Nick in row 3 right.  I THINK that’s me behind Nick, but can’t tell – if it is me, I’m not too proud as my bottom arm is breaking down and I’m wearing GLOVES.  Eeesh.

Check out that sweet-ass trough!  Finally, check out how badly we are getting thrashed by a team (I think that was Signapore?) with horrible timing…

Interesting…

September 23, 2008 paddlesports 2 comments

I’d like to give this a try to see if there’s any utility in it.  Oh, and I don’t mean getting a tattoo on my chest…

Here’s some more information on the “Big Stick”:

About the Kahuna Big Stick™

Back in the day, the Hawaiian Beach Boys introduced stand-up paddling (SUP) on their wooden boards by stroking their way across the blue seas. Kahuna Creations has taken that idea to the streets. Now, longboarders can paddle their way across the black pavement. A longboard paddle offers a smooth, fast ride, and gets a rider where they want to go in style.

MY Boy

September 20, 2008 paddlesports 2 comments

Most of you know that I play golf – I used to play quite a bit but paddling (and last year, triathlon) has sucked up a lot of my time.

Anyways, the Ryder Cup is a golf tournament that takes place in even number years where the Europeans play against the U.S.

The last few years I’ve watched, to my dismay, the Euros admininster beat downs to the US.

This year, Tiger isn’t playing so the interest is not as high – BUT, someone even more Asian than Tiger is playing for the US.  His name is Anthony Kim and he’s from Los Angeles (K-Town to be precise).  AND, he has the same birthday as me!

REPRESENT!

Anthony is not the typical boring PGA player – this kid has some fire and plays hard.

Paired with fat-boy Phil Snickerson (real last name is Mickelson) early Friday, the duo won their match starting the US off strong.

Catch my boy this weekend on TV!  USA!  USA!  USA!

UPDATE:  For those of you that don’t believe I play golf….
