And R&R’s First Super Idiot Award Goes To…

November 30, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

… Plaxico Burress, Wide Reciever for the New York Football Giants.

Plaxico accidentally shot himself in the thigh Friday night at a club.  He’s going to turn himself in Monday to face charges since he did not have a license to carry the gun.

What a moron.

Phil’s LARD Banquet Videos

November 25, 2008 paddlesports 3 comments

Phil recently emailed the team with a url where you can download his end of the year video.

Also, saving me an enormous amount of time, he sent out a link for that video download in a format that you can drop right in to your iPhone.

What, you don’t have an iPhone?  You must be a Cro-Magnon

I want to know who wants to practice this weekend…

LARD’s ‘08 Banquet

November 24, 2008 paddlesports 1 comment

What a great weekend highlighted by LARD’s end of the season banquet.

The Banquet committee found a great location and we had a great spread.  Highlights from the evening included a performance by our very own Greg Yee.  Greg played us his latest song – “LARD Woman”.  Pure genius.

The usual awards were given out with the top honor of the Jack Ko Award going to K1.  Well deserved, K1 – now I have to get a fake plant for the empty stand at my front door!

Wrapping up the evening was an extended video piece from Phil.  As usual, an awesome production.

Thank you to all that made it out.  It was truly a very special weekend.

The US Auto Company’s Negotiation Tactics

November 20, 2008 paddlesports 1 comment

The US Auto company executives show up in Washington on private jets to ask for bailout money.

Wow.  They sure need that bailout money.  In their defense the three auto companies defended the CEOs’ travel as standard procedure.

“They’re coming to Washington to beg the taxpayers to help them. It’s unseemly to be running around on a $20,000 flight versus a $500 round trip”

~Thomas Schatz, president of the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste

While they are at it, they should have the Somali Pirates negotiate for them.

My take?  Simple?

There are two things wrong with the US automakers.  First, management sucks, as the above example clearly shows.  Second, and perhaps most importantly, their cars, to put it bluntly (like I always do), absolutely suck when compared to their competition.  My apologies to the few of my friends that actually drive American made cars.

Those 2 things need to be fixed before any bailout money is doled out.

The ultimate solution?  Let the automakers file for bankruptcy or go out of business, it will sort out, just like failed businesses in other sectors.  Hey, maybe Toyota will buy Ford’s assets, and those American workers that are currently getting the shaft by Ford/GM, etc. will be hired by Toyota’s new Detroit division.

See, I’m not a party line Democrat.

Now that I think about it, I’m going to head over to Washington and ask for a student loan bailout.

KGB

November 19, 2008 paddlesports 1 comment

During our 2006 trip to Taiwan for the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships, our translator Jeff called Nick “KGB”.

Here’s KGB at last year’s La Jolla Shores OC1 race (Long Course) making the ocean obey.

FYI – KGB was wearing gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.

A Great Artcile on Honesty & Integrity

November 19, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

Playing golf is a gentleman’s game where honesty and intergrity are at the forefront.  Players at all levels frequently call penalties on themselves (sure, there are those that use the good ‘ole foot wedge when no one is looking, but don’t get me started on that – perhaps another post).  Because of this honesty, I have reported a smooth “14″ on a few holes before.

Here’s an article on JP Hayes who called a penalty on himself AFTER his round was over.  It wasn’t any round – it was a round that would have qualified him for the PGA Tour.

Hayes inadvertently played a non-conforming golf ball – one not on the list approved for competition by the United States Golf Association – for one hole of a second-stage qualifier in McKinney, Texas.

The 43-year-old Appleton native disqualified himself from the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament last week. The first DQ of his career was especially harsh because it left him ineligible to play fulltime on the PGA Tour in 2009.

Clearly, his caddie should have caught this mistake, but Hayes refused to blame his caddie.

Class act.  Hayes is definitely a guy I will be rooting for.

Arrrrr!

An article on the modern-day pirate by the BBC.

Once a pirate makes his fortune, he tends to take on a second and third wife – often very young women from poor nomadic clans, who are renowned for their beauty.

“They promote the use of drugs – chewing khat [a stimulant which keeps one alert] and smoking hashish – and alcohol,” Mr Hassan says.

A very interesting read – especially since these morons have recently hijacked an oil tanker.

Sports Museum Opening In Los Angeles

November 18, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

It’s time for a field trip – there will be a sports memorabilia museum opening this month in Downtown Los Angeles.

The LAT wrote an article on it today.  A quote from, most likely, the smartest person at USC:

“Gary has assembled the most stunning visual history of sports that I know of,” said David Carter, director of the USC Sports Business Institute. “And it’s not just sports. It’s the business of sports, the evolution of sports as entertainment. He helps you to see sports through a different lens.”

I want to go see the Honus Wagner baseball card that is worth almost $3 million.  Think he’ll trade me for a George Brett rookie card?  ;)

Who wants to go?
