Is the Future of the Vancouver Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Jeopardy?

December 30, 2008 paddlesports 2 comments

With the financial downturn hitting everyone hard, the future of the Vancouver dragon boat tournament as we know it may be affected.  There’s an interesting thread on Dragon Boat West on this subject.

Barack the Magic Negro

December 28, 2008 paddlesports 3 comments

Now, if any of us – Asian, White or otherwise – sung a song to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon” but changed the words to “Barack the Magic Negro, lived in DC”, I’m pretty sure we’d be branded rascists.

However, if you are a Republican, apparently, you can distribute a CD with such a racist song on it to your Republican constituents – and even defend your actions.  That’s exactly what Tennessee Republican Chip Saltsman did.

The craziness doesn’t stop there.

How did this racist song build traction?  Rush Limbaugh played it on his radio show AND HE DEFENDED IT!!!!

Suddenly, calling someone a nappy-ass hoe is not so bad.

Sheer madness.

I did a bit of paddling – on a plastic kayak and on a stand up paddle board.

Here are a few pictures from our trip.

Keyees & Midas Video Analysis

Well, not really – just a music video of my 2 pooches.   It’s nothing like one of Phil’s masterpieces but I had a blast putting it together.

Have a look by CLICKING HERE and tell me what you think!

(I did this all on my new macbook)  :)

That’s Mr. Secretary To You

December 15, 2008 paddlesports 4 comments

It’s official.

I have been appointed Dragon Boat USA’s Secretary.

What is Dragon Boat USA you ask?

It’s the official branch of the U.S. Canoe & Kayak’s (USACK) dedicated to growing the sport of dragon boat.  USACK falls under the International Canoe Federation (ICF).  The ICF is responsible for, among other things, Olympic paddling.  To give you some reference, the 2006 Taiwan World Championship some LARD members participated in was an ICF event.

On the other side, as most of you know, the United States Dragon Boat Federation (USDBF) which is aligned with the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) has been the main entities behind dragon boat for quite some time and is responsible for its growth (or lack thereof).  The National Championship held in Long Beach was a USDBF event.

The ICF/USACK is a relatively new player to dragon boating but has the track record to expand the sport and give dragon boating the exposure we all know it deserves so much.  With the ICF/USACK backing dragon boat, our sport has more of a chance of getting into the Olympics.  If our sport continues with IDBF/USDBF, be prepared to continue trying to explain to people what dragon boating is for a very long time.

Should be fun….

Scott is Cool

December 14, 2008 paddlesports Leave a comment

Clearly, I am not talking about me.

Rather, I’m talking about Scott Wagar of Willmar, Minnesota who filled up a squirt gun filled with fox piss and squirted it on some punks that were toilet papering his house.

He did it at night, so, of course, he was wearing night vision goggles.

VERY cool.

One question – how does one get enough fox piss to fill a squirt gun?

ZRE Full Carbon Outrigger Paddle For Sale

December 13, 2008 paddlesports 4 comments

I’ve realized there’s no need for me to have two 50″ outrigger paddles so I’m putting my 50″ ZRE Power Surge Medium Outrigger Paddle up for sale.

The paddle retails for $244.95.

I’m asking for $175.00 (please no haggling).  ;)

The paddle is all carbon, very light (11.5 oz), in excellent condition.  It is significantly lighter than my Kialoa Axel II (close to 19 oz.).  For reference, a Full Carbon Burnwater Reactor II Dragon Boat Paddle is approximately 15 oz.

I Swear It Wasn’t Me…

December 11, 2008 paddlesports 3 comments

… So I walk into the bathroom yesterday in the building my office is in. It’s a relatively small bathroom – there’s a urinal and 2 toilet stalls.

As I walk in, I smell, quite possibly, one of the worst smells I have ever smelled. Like something had been dead for quite some time and someone took a dump on it.  My nose hairs were curling.

Right when I walk in, a guy walks out of the stall. He and I are the only ones in there at the time. Ashamed and a bit embarrassed, he hurriedly washes his hands and high tails it out of the bathroom.

Literally, within 30 seconds, another guy walks in.

I’m sure he smelled what I smelled.

I’m sure he thought I was the one that dropped that nasty-ass bomb.

I couldn’t find anything (funny or otherwise) to say so I just walked out of the bathroom…
