Want to Race in Taiwan this Summer?

March 31, 2009 paddlesports Leave a comment

Paddlers,

Dragon Boat USA (a part of USA Canoe & Kayak) is putting together an elite team to represent the US this year at the ICF World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on July 18-19, 2009.  Previously, we had to call off organizing the team because of political reasons.  Now, a spot has opened up for Team USA and we are moving full steam ahead!

There will be one premiere mixed team.  We are drawing paddlers from all over the US so spots are very limited.

There will likely be testing for a spot on the team (depends on interest).  As such, we are only asking for high caliber paddlers.

The trip will likely be partially subsidized, but be prepared to pay in the area of $1,300.00 flying out of LAX (includes air, lodging, ground transportation, food).

If you are interested in participating, please let me know via email ASAP.  Your immediate response is required.

Feel free to forward this post to anyone you feel may be interested.

HPC Infecting You…

March 27, 2009 paddlesports Leave a comment

… Mike @HPC (www.HPCSport.com) just dropped off a lovely pre-race warmup protocol for us to sample in Tempe.

Code name: Merrill

The coaches have yet to “officially” discuss it(we’ll do that tonight), but if it’s approved, get ready for a nice warmup.

What do you need?

Yoga mat or towel (you can “borrow” one from the hotel) and running shoes (you should already have them per Chuck’s previous email).

More details at the meeting tonight – 9pm.

Stay tuned to www.twitter.com/teamlard for instant details.

Too Bad, So Sad

March 26, 2009 paddlesports 4 comments

An email from Bob McNamara, incumbent head coach of the USDBF:

The IDBF-ICF issue: a coach and paddler’s perspective

Bob McNamara, Philadelphia

The international tensions between the IDBF and the ICF have recently
reached the US with the creation of a new organization, Dragon Boat USA
that is under the umbrella of USACK. I strongly believe that as a
matter of principle that the ICF should back off its attempts to take
over the sport. As a matter of honor and loyalty, individual paddlers,
coaches and teams should not support any USACK/ICF activity in dragon
boating that infringes on the established domain of the USDBF and the
IDBF. If, on the other hand, the USACK/ICF would respect the authority
of the USDBF/IDBF a positive working relationship could be mutually
beneficial. The basic issue relates to control of the sport at the
national and international level. In simple terms it means which
international group has the right to hold “World Championships” and
which national entity has the right to formulate the National Team.

USACK and the ICF are latecomers to dragon boat and their assertion of
authority is presumptuous and ethically suspect. Clearly dragon boating
would never have risen to its stature or popularity if that had been
left to the ICF. It was solely the efforts of the IDBF that took the
sport from a festival scene to a true international sport. Without the
IDBF we would not have seen the tremendous growth of dragon boating in
the USA, Canada and elsewhere. Within the USA, it is the USDBF that has
sent representatives to IDBF World Championships since 1995 and created
a regional structure and national championship race-off. USACK has only
just formalized an entity yet it is already advertising itself as the
National Team that will compete for the World Championship.

Those US paddlers who have been graced with participating in IDBF world
championships, particularly those who have won medals in these races,
owe much to the hard work of the IDBF. Without the IDBF the great
sporting and cultural experiences these individuals have enjoyed would
never have come to pass. No Penang, Sydney, Berlin, Shanghai, Poznan,
and on and on. Any such individual that participates in aiding the ICF
attempt to control dragon boating is disrespecting this legacy. Some of
the individuals who are creating this alternate US “national dragon boat
team” have benefited from the IDBF efforts and are, in my opinion,
demonstrating a shallow “me first” type of disloyalty to those who
brought the sport to its current level.

Those who paddle and coach the sport in the US owe allegiance to the
USDBF regardless of whether they have ever participated in the IDBF
worlds. It is the USDBF that has promoted the sport and the many racing
opportunities now available to you in the US. The ICF entities have not
been part of the growth of this sport either here or in Canada where
many of us race.

USACK already has its cake; it controls the Olympic bids for paddle
sports. One would think that they would spend all of their energy
trying to improve on the spotty US performance in those sports rather
than stake a false claim to hosting the US National Dragon Boat Team.
USACK should stop trying to compete with and instead support the USDBF
by encouraging young paddlers to try our sport. USACK could then
benefit by tapping into the young talent we introduce to paddling. The
General Assembly of International Sports Federations (GAISF) has
recognized dragon boating as distinct from canoe and kayak and the
authority of the IDBF over the sport. In the USA, we need to move
forward with that in mind and actively resist any attempts by USACK, an
organization principally involved in canoe and kayak, to control dragon
boat or to declare itself the home of a national dragon boat team.
Those who have benefited from the IDBF should not now turn their back on
it.

Can’t we all just get along?  Who gives a $hit if your plastic medal says “ICF” or “USDBF”?  I don’t think the rats in my garage mind one way or the other.

Good Teammates

Coming up on our first race of the season, I though we could benefit from rereading (or reading for the first time) one of my previous posts about being a good teammate.

I think it’s worth the read- it’s the only time Vi has ever complimented me on one of my posts.

A Positive Post

March 23, 2009 paddlesports 2 comments

I am just so excited that Vi and I get to drive to Arizona instead of using the airline tickets that I purchased because a judge in Riverside is requiring that I personally appear in his beautiful court room this Friday at 3:30 p.m – even though I appeared before him today.

I can’t wait!

How awesome!

UPDATE:  I’m guessing I’m fairly good at persuading people.  I got a message from the court clerk later that afternoon telling me that the Judge has agreed to reschedule the hearing this Friday afternoon in Riverside.  I think he came to his senses some time after the hearing.  Looks like Vi and I will be able to fly out to Tempe – and I won’t have to put on a monkey suit on Friday!

I Referred This Case Away

March 23, 2009 paddlesports 2 comments

I got a FB message from Mike.  He has a friend (acquaintance?) that needed some legal assistance – turns out I didn’t handle the area of law she was looking for so I referred her to a friend/colleague.

I just spoke to my friend and this is the person I referred to her:

Wanna Lose Weight?

March 22, 2009 paddlesports 3 comments

Imagine this:

Midas sneaking out onto the balcony at 4:00 am last night to take a dump (he got distracted and forgot to poop on his “last call” walk of the night by a bunch of girls parading around the front of our place ).

Keyees pawing at me at 4:00 am because somehow the doggie door got blocked while Midas made his way out.  I get up, let Midas in, and go back to sleep (failing to see the pile of steaming poop).

I wake up at 5, head off to practice.

Throughout the day, it rains.  And rains.  And rains.  We are away spending time with the family.

Later in the afternoon, I am notified of the poop that is now saturated with rain and has spread across the balcony.

I have no other option but to clean it myself.  I literally dry heaved multiple times while cleaning it up.

You still want to eat that cake in front of you?

Mike of HPC Showing YOU How to Do Pushups

March 22, 2009 paddlesports Leave a comment

To prove that Mike @ HPC isn’t just torturing us, he’s torturing himself!

Think pushups are boring?

Mike just dropped two new videos.  My favorites -  the Clap-BEHIND- the-Back Pushup and the pushups with your feet on the wall (video 2).
