Quick Shout Out to the LARD Women

May 30, 2009 paddlesports 1 comment

I steered and called the LARD’s women boat today.

You ladies are kicking some serious arse. I’ve never felt a women’s boat move like that before.

As Yonnie said near the end of practice – “That felt like a men’s boat.”

Keep up the good work, ladies.

What Google Has In Store

Google has a new product coming down the pike called “Wave” . They’ve opened it up to developers and should be available soon to us regular folk.

Have a peak at the developer preview video here.  Group photo album anyone?  A quick summary from Google:

What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.
A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.
A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

Here are some screen shots:

I’m sure the developers are going to add a lot more stuff – most likely Facebook and Twitter integration will be one of the many new functions.

Erg Makeup – Change in Plan

I thought I could get out of a CLE course on Thursday, June 3rd, so I scheduled the erg makeup that evening.  However, in retrospect, I don’t think I can miss that class.

SOO, to try and make things as easy as possible for you all, I will be bringing the erg to practice NEXT Saturday, June 6.  We will test AFTER practice as you won’t be testing on OC2 prior to erg as the others did.  Please make sure you go to practice that day if you plan to test.  Showing up after practice to test is not a good idea.

Sorry for any confusion.

Let me know if you plan to test.

New Waterproof Garmin Forerunner to Drop Soon

May 28, 2009 paddlesports 1 comment

The new Garmin 310XT should be available this July.

What makes this watch very attractive is that it is waterproof and looks more sleek.  As a  triathlete, the previous models were not very swim friendly.  The solution was to leave the watch in T1 (rendering it useless for tracking stats during the swim), or putting the watch in your swim cap.

Looks like it’s going to be very promising but the jury is out on those buttons.  I don’t think I can press them accurately under the duress of an intense training session.  We shall see.

Garmin, wanna send me one to test?

Here’s a review from Wired.

Happy Dragon Boat Day

Wouldn’t it be great if the U.S. recognized Dragon Boat Day and give us a Friday or a Monday off so we could go paddle?

Well, in China, not only do you get one day off from work – you get THREE days off!

Beginning today, May 28 trough May 30, China will be celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival Holiday.  If you are stuck working on May 28, you get 300% of your normal wage.  If you have to work on the 29th and/or 30th, you get 200% of your wage.

Mike Young at HPC is in China working with athletes and coaches over there.  He recently posted on twitter that there are dragon boat races everywhere in honor of the holiday.  IT MUST BE NICE!!!!

In honor of Dragon Boat Day, we’ll be doing the HPC midweek at the Rose Bowl tonight at 7pm.  Achilles will be in attendance showing off his fresh manicure/pedicure.  Unfortunately, I’ll only be directing the workout and not partaking directly as I’m still recovering from some back issues.  Come on out for a great workout – I know Allison really enjoyed the HPC workout last night in LB!

Asian American Issues

A great website on Asian American issues – www.asian-nation.org.

Here’s a reprint of an article that appeared in the Los Angeles Times by David Pierson about Sex and the Asian Man which talks about the negative light the media portrays Asian men.

The stereotypes have a clear emotional effect on Asian American men, said William Liu, an assistant professor of counseling psychology at the University of Iowa. Those who live in predominantly non-Asian communities begin to loathe their appearance and develop ideals of beauty that value blond hair and blue eyes. Some court non-Asian women exclusively as a sign of status because “they’re able to overcome stereotypes and cultural prohibitions,” Liu said.

Asian American men lack the success Asian American women have had in interracial relationships. It’s a sensitive fact complicated by the belief by many in the community that society objectifies Asian females as hyper-sexual Suzy Wongs. The 2000 Census shows that Asian American women are more than twice as likely to be involved in an interracial marriage than their male counterparts.

Looks like there are many more issues to explore.  The site also gives props to one of my favorite websites www.angryasianman.com.

Thanks, Ken H. of DieselFish for sharing this via Facebook.

Girlfriends and Firecrackers

Gentlemen, if your girlfriend comes at you with firecrackers, run.  Run far away.

A Russian woman got so upset by the news that her boyfriend intended to leave her that she tied several firecrackers to his penis and exploded them, the Life.ru web-site reports.

Article can be found HERE.

Thanks, Mike Young over at HPC for linking to this on your twitter feed.

Dragon Boating on the Jade Channel This Week

May 25, 2009 paddlesports 5 comments

Vi and I ran into Bill T. and his family at Daikokuya this evening.

Bill told me there will be dragon boat races from the Hong Kong area on the Jade Channel this Thursday at 11 a.m. Unfortunately, I seem to have every channel in the world except the Jade Channel.

Since I don’t get that channel, can any of you help a brother out and record it?

I have a free new and unworn Aftermath T-Shirt for you (size large), for the first person that can get me a copy.

Phil, you out there????  ;)

Mowing at Daikokuya

May 23, 2009 paddlesports 3 comments

Last night, Vi and I went to try out Daikokuya- a ramen joint in Monterey Park.  I LOVE ramen.  Daikokuya has 2 other locations – one in Little Tokyo and the other in Costa Mesa.  Their official website can be found here.

Prior to trying this place out, the best ramen in the Monterey Park/Alhambra area that I have tried was Ajisen Ramen (Lori & Lilly – we went to Ajisen after your ink sessions)

Put simply, Daikokuya now has the best ramen in the SGV (of course, I’d be willing to try any ramen places anyone suggests).

Daidokuya is tucked away in the shopping center on the north-west corner of Atlantic and Garvey.  The place is TINY, so if you don’t want to have to wait for a table, go early.  The menu at Daikokuya is very simple – one type of ramen (pork) and one type of fried rice (pork).  There are also a handful of appetizers.

IMG_0631

We ordered the asparagus wrapped in pork.   The sauce you see tasted like terrayaki sauce (not sure if it has some fancy name or not).  I’m going to be ordering this again the next time I go back – which will be very soon.

IMG_0632Damn.  The ramen was SO good.  The ramen was firm and not overcooked and the soup was very tastey.  I could have done without the sprouts (or not as many).  The ramen also comes with what appears to be a peeled hard boiled eggs.  After biting into it, I was kind of surprised.  It was kind of like a “medium-rare” egg – the yolk and the white around the yolk were soft.  Interesting, it’s the first time I’ve had an egg like that.  If it freaks you out, just put it to the side or if I’m sitting next to you, give it to me (that’s what Vi did).

Although, I was full, I wanted another bowl – and another – and another.  I’m compulsive like that.

Next time I go, I’m going to try out the fried rice – maybe have it for dessert?  Let us know if you guys want to try it out – we’ll go with you!
