Folding OC6

October 28, 2009 paddlesports 1 comment

Yes, a folding OC6.  There appear to be some laws in Australia regulating the size of canoe trailers.  The folding Mirage OC6 spawned from this law.

Go to here for more details.

If that’s not small enough, how about a three piece OC6?

Do I hear 4?  What about 6?  That way each person can take home their section of the boat!

A REAL Race

October 26, 2009 paddlesports 2 comments

Check out this race European Paddling Marathon Race.

You will see the following:

1. Dragon boat racing kayaks, c1, canoes, etc. at 3:04;

2.  Volunteers passing out beer (4:04) and Red Bull (4:27);

3.  Running with a dragon boat at 4:08; and

4.  Whitewater rafting (Class III) in a dragon boat at 5:26.

We are wusses for paddling in flat water and not drinking beer while paddling.

The clubbing music is annoying so I’d recommend you watch it while it’s muted.

Installing the Fabled Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro

October 23, 2009 paddlesports Leave a comment

Here’s a review on Windows 7 with a spin – installing it on a Macbook Pro using VM Ware. For the first time ever, I laughed reading a review of a piece of software.  It’s clearly written by a Mac Fan Boy but an entertaining read nonetheless.

Here’s a taste:

Even thinking about installing Windows on my beautiful, pristine MacBook Pro makes me feel dirty. Dirty -like “walking-in-on-a-sibling-in-the-shower-and-finding-yourself-aroused” dirty…

Show this every time is the default option??!!! Who the fuck in their right fucking mind would ever want to see that useless fucking fuck box ever fucking again?

Although I rarely, OK, never, use it, I have Windows 7 RC installed on my MacBook Pro.  I haven’t had any problems with it (maybe because I don’t use it?).

I also have Windows 7 RC installed my my Dell XPS 13 inch laptop.  We use it primarily to stream our mutts on ustream.  It’s pretty damn solid.  The computer boots up fast and once I press the Google Chrome shorcut, it takes only a few seconds for the ustream page to come up.

We’ve been using Windows 7 RC for a few months now and it has only crashed two times.  There are a few annoying windows that pop up – for instance, a window that ask me every couple days if I want to allow Java to run on my computer.  DOY.

But from my limited use of Windows 7 RC, it seems pretty solid.  I can’t wait until Vi gets her new Dell laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled.

Just don’t get me started about Microsoft Office’s Ribbon… I’ve never missed the File Menu so much.

My Favorite Watch

October 20, 2009 paddlesports 4 comments

I have a few watches – fancy (but not super fancy), kinda fancy, workout, GPS, and heart rate monitors. I’m not brand loyal and I’m not into jewelry watches. I have watches from Omega, Timex, Seiko, Polar, Under Armour and Garmin (not counting my promotional Laker watch!). I prefer the watches I can wear in multiple situations – kind of like an SUV of watches. The Omega Speedmaster and Timex Ironman are my two primary watches for that reason.

If I had to pick only one watch, it would be the Timex Ironman (Sorry, Omega). If you get the right model, you will get 2 time zones, day, date, chrono, timer, interval timer and 3 alarms. That pretty much covers everything – from using the timer to thwart meter maid tickets, to using it to time those brutal sprint intervals, to using it as an alarm clock in a pinch, the Ironman can do it all. I can wear the watch to the office (although it looks a bit funky in a full blown business suit), in the pool, or on the boat. It can go anywhere.

There’s one weakness to the Ironman. Ironically, it’s the watch’s durability. I average about 2 years per Ironman, over the years I have had close to 15 of them. That being said, don’t let the durability turn you off because there are a few ways to deal with it.

First, you can buy your watch from REI. Assuming you are an REI member, you can bring the watch back to REI when it breaks (usually the bands give out on me). REI’s return policy is great and they’ll take care of you. However, be prepared to pay full retail unless you are fortunate enough to pick one up during a sale.

A second option is to send your watch back to Timex for repair. If it is within a year of purchase, the warranty will likely cover your problem. If you are outside of the warranty, you can send the watch back to Timex with a $10 check and they will either repair your watch or replace it.

I sent in one of my Ironman watches back to Timex yesterday. The customer service person I emailed prior to mailing it in said that my watch would be replaced.

Not bad for 10 bucks!

Someone is Doing Some Reconnaissance On HPC

October 13, 2009 paddlesports Leave a comment

The back-end side readyandreach allows me to see how people found/landed on this site.

Today, someone found readyandreach by typing in the search term “what is hpc when referring to paddling”.

Now how would HPC have anything to do with dragon boat paddling?  ;)

Racing Concrete Canoes

October 13, 2009 paddlesports 1 comment

I read an article yesterday about the possibility of fee hikes for selective majors in the UC system, including UCLA.

What does this have to do with paddling?  Read on:

“At the UCLA studio of the American Society of Civil Engineers, undergraduates are engaged in such difficult extracurricular projects as designing and building a 20-foot-long concrete canoe to race against other California college teams.”

Turns out there’s a Concrete Canoe Competition every year.  The next race is in Cal Poly SLO June 17-19, 2010.

Cal won the competition this past June.

I’d love to see the races and what the winning designs are.  I would take a wild guess and say that if the boats are relatively similar, the best crew would win.

From the pictures on the left which are from the ASCE website, looks like they are using ZRE paddles and Stohlquist pfds.

Who would you choose on your dream team?
