Single Man Dragon Boat

January 6, 2009

UPDATE: After the post below, I heard from Jude.  He said that he’s designing a new wing because it is still too tippy for beginners that have absolutely no sense of balance.  The updated version will be out in a few months.

20+man dragon boats, 20 man dragon boats, 10 man dragon boats, 6 man outrigger canoes, 4 man outrigger canoes, 2-man outrigger canoes, single man outrigger canoes.

Jude has added the single man dragon boat.

It looks very similar to the one he had at last year’s SF tournament – kind of looks like Star Wars X-Wing Fighter.

My opinion?  First I have never paddled it so I don’t know how it performs – both in relation to a dragon boat and an oc1.  By the picture, I would think that the seating is not the same as in a dragon boat (knees are very high in picture).

As for practicality, I can’t see too many people (any?) buying one – unless it is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper (near $1,000) than the lowest level Huki oc1 (I seriously doubt it).

My recommendation? If you have the loot, man up and buy an oc1 (I suggest a Huki V1-X), huli a few times and you’ll be well on your way to improving your paddling.

That being said, I’m sure if Jude sent down one of these boats to LARD, I’d be better able to evaluate its utility.

On a side note, Jude needs to work on his dragon boat paddling stroke.  😉
