Fun Weekend at the Baby Long Beach Race

May 4, 2009

Most of the local Long Beach teams met this past weekend to have an early season “duke-out” on the water.  Most teams were local but a few teams, UCSD, Cal and a few others, came to Long Beach to race.

Wow.  The local teams are getting FAST!  As a coach and paddler in the Long Beach community, it’s phenomenal to see this explosive growth – not only in the number of teams, but quality of paddlers.  This bodes will for the future of Long Beach paddling.

It’s also great to see my alma mater UCSD paddle so well.  If only there was dragon boating there when I was a Triton.  Also, I enjoy watching UCLA crush it’s competition as it is the school I root for most in sports.  UCLA crushing SC brings utter joy to my life.  I can tell (and heard) the UCLA kids are working hard even when they aren’t in the water.  Let them be an example for all of those lazy paddlers out there.

Even more fun then my constant and continuing personal battles with Chuck (running, oc1, erg, oc2 time trial, dragon boat steering, you name it) is the great competition with LARD has with the Space Dragons.  LARD edged out the Space Dragons in the 500m Final, Space Dragons returned the favor in the 200m Final.  Those were some fun races.

I’m sure there will be many more to follow.  Great times.

Note to LARD paddlers – most of you are now awake.  It is time for the rest of you to join the party.  😉

Comparatively speaking (looking at each race), lard consistently placed first in all 500’s, while Space consistently held first in all 200’s.
