iPhone or Palm Pre?

May 22, 2009

One of my morning stops – theiPhoneBlog posted a great article for the undecided on whether to get a iPhone or Pre.

Believe it or not, it’s a very fair comparison of these two heavy weight contenders.

Being an iPhone guy, the multi-media integration of the iPhone is absolutely phenomenal.   Tivo shows to iPhone?  Check.  Automatically sync music from PC/Mac to iPhone?  Check.  Automatically downloading new podcasts daily and syncing them to the iPhone?  Check.  Sirius on iPhone?   Check.  Movies on iPhone?  Check.  Slingbox on iPhone?  Well, 1/2 check (because Apple is AT&T’s bitch, you can only stream t.v. on a wifi connection).

One of the things I will be most curious about on the Pre is the keyboard.  I’ve yet to find a keyboard on a phone I like.  Here’s the description of the Pre’s keyboard:

However, the Pre’s keyboard is reportedly somewhere between a Treo Pro and a Palm Centro: softer, more gummy keys with a narrow width overall. It might not be to everyone’s liking.

That doesn’t sound very attractive to me.   I had the last 3 treos and Vi had the Centro for awhile.  The Treo keyboards were acceptable but my sausage-like thumbs seemed to hit multiple keys at the same time.  That Centro keyboard was an utter disaster.  Without a doubt, there is a learning curve for the iPhone’s virtual keyboard, but once you get the hang of it, your typing will be even faster than on a real keyboard.

The keyboard has to be crap. Those narrow portrait-mode hard keyboards are never any good. The only way to provide an adequate physical keyboard is in landscape mode. The G1’s keyboard is the best I’ve used since the Sidekick which continues to be the gold standard for phone keyboards.

Unless they’ve figured out how to adapt the iPhone style “I can guess what you wanted to type even though you didn’t actually type that” predicition mechanism to it? Then it might be workable…
