Facebook Acquiring Friendfeed – What Does It Mean?

August 11, 2009

Robert Scoble has a very interesting and thoughtful post on Facebook acquiring Friendfeed and what it means.

I blogged yesterday that this marriage was the end of Twitter.  Scoble thinks it's a shot at Google with Twitter being "collateral damage".  Bottom line is this acquistion is about search – not necessarily social networking.

Why?  Easy.  Google makes its gobs of money from search.  Facebook, make pretty much no money and has very limited search capabilities.  Friendfeed has a pretty good real time search engine.

If Facebook can create a search function that users want/can use (i.e. real time search), Facebook will make money – the goal of every business.
