Racing Concrete Canoes

October 13, 2009

I read an article yesterday about the possibility of fee hikes for selective majors in the UC system, including UCLA.

What does this have to do with paddling?  Read on:

“At the UCLA studio of the American Society of Civil Engineers, undergraduates are engaged in such difficult extracurricular projects as designing and building a 20-foot-long concrete canoe to race against other California college teams.”

Turns out there’s a Concrete Canoe Competition every year.  The next race is in Cal Poly SLO June 17-19, 2010.

Cal won the competition this past June.

I’d love to see the races and what the winning designs are.  I would take a wild guess and say that if the boats are relatively similar, the best crew would win.

From the pictures on the left which are from the ASCE website, looks like they are using ZRE paddles and Stohlquist pfds.

Who would you choose on your dream team?
