Shanghai 10 Man Races – Testing Protocol

April 26, 2010

For those of you even remotely interested in the Shanghai 10-man Races – here’s the testing protocol I will be using to select the team:

There will be a 2 part test for the Shanghai 10 man races – an on water subjective evaluation and an on water time trial.

The first component of the test will be a subjective test.  This session will be held on 6/26/2010 from 11:00-12:30 pm at Mother’s Beach.  Please meet at/near LARD’s tree.  Candidates will be evaluated on blending and paddling technique while paddling on a 10 man and/or 20 man dragon boat.  Do not fear.  We will NOT be doing any sort of time trial or one-man/one row boat pulls during this session. I just want to see how you paddle. I will be filming the session.  This footage will be used to evaluate your current technique and your ability to blend with the paddlers around you.  Please make sure that you are warmed up by 11:00 a.m.

The OC2 on water test is scheduled for Saturday, 7/3/2010 in Long Beach. We will be “piggy backing” this test with LARD’s on water testing for the LB Race. If you are a LARD member and are already testing on that day, I will use the results from your LARD test so that you will not have to test twice. If a LARD member opts not to test for LB, s/he will need to test on 7/3/2010 for Shanghai consideration.  Out of fairness, I will not use your Vancouver test data.

The OC2 test will be held in the waterway behind the Ralph’s Supermarket on PCH.  The course will be approximately 300 meters in length.  You will be testing on an OC2 from the 2nd seat and will paddle with a dragon boat paddle.  Your steersman will sit in the front seat.  I will record your time and note any relevant weather/tide conditions.  You may also be filmed during this test.

After that, I should have enough data to finalize the team.  I hope to have the roster finalized by Mid-July.

If you have not responded or responded with a “maybe”, now is the time to commit.  Here’s the link to the evite: http://www.evite.com/app/publicUrl/FYIYVDQHDRLHQWBALFEU/SCDBC

This is what I need from you at this time:

An email to me at: readyandreach(at)gmail.com with the following:

1.  Your name, cell phone, and email address;
2.  Whether you intend to test on 7/3/2010; and
3.  Whether you intend to paddle on 6/26/2010.

I hope you all can make it for these 2 sessions.  If you can’t, please contact me and I may be able to make other arrangements.

As 7/3 approaches, I will be in contact with you so you know approximately what time you will be testing.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks everyone!

Happy training,

~Scott
