More Earth-Shattering Research on Dragon Boat

June 4, 2010

After reading my last post on dragon boat research, Vi sent me another article titled “Anthropometric and Physiological Characteristics of Elite Male Dragon Boat Paddlers.”

Holy smokes! What sort of wisdom can I learn from this article to make my team go faster?  Maybe the secret to a great start?  Maybe a new revolutionary way to seat the boat?  Maybe the secret of a solid catch?

NOPE.

The article is summarized as follows:

“In summary, the current study demonstrated that there was much variation in the anthropometric and physiological characteristics of the members of the Great Britain national squad. The results also suggested that the most important characteristics in predicting water-based performance are high VO2max values and low body mass.  These findings suggest that coaches should consider training programmes that maximize VO2max and minimize unnecessary body mass levels.”

Or in layman’s terms, “Less Fat = Better Paddler”.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!  I think we have found the Holy Grail of dragon boating!
