Our San Diego Paddling Brethren

December 10, 2010

Our San Diego paddling friends scored a victory that will allow them to continue paddling down at Dog Beach/Fiesta Island/Mission Bay area.

The basics – paddlers (dragon boat, outrigger, and stand up paddlers) want to continue paddling at Dog’s Beach in Mission Bay.  Dog owners – Fiesta Island Dog Owners (“FIDO”) do not want paddlers around because their presence (including a road that allows access to the water way) is a risk for their dogs (who enjoy the beach leash-free).  FIDO wants, essentially, exclusive access to this public area.

The Mission Bay Park Planning Committee voted to allow paddlers access to this area.  Les Hopper was, as usual, gracious in victory stating, “We’re very happy and grateful.”

My thoughts, you ask?  Paddlers and dog owners can coexist in peace.  FIDO needs to get off their high horse and find a a way to make the relationship work.

Share the beach, you do not own it.
